Pendleton's Rules
Source: David Pendleton and colleagues, The Consultation (1984)
A structured debrief that starts with the learner's own view of what went well and then what could improve, with the observer adding their perspective after each.
When to use it
Use it after an observed task such as a presentation, client meeting or practice session.
How to apply it
- Check the learner wants feedback now and clarify any facts.
- Ask the learner what went well.
- Add what you saw going well.
- Ask the learner what they would do differently.
- Add your own suggestions for improvement.
- Agree a short action plan together.
Tip: The fixed order can feel formulaic; if the learner is clearly worried about one thing, address it rather than making them wait.
