When to use it

Use it for everyday feedback with peers, reports or your manager, especially when you want them to reflect rather than defend.

How to apply it
  1. State a specific observation of behaviour, as a camera would record it, without judgement.
  2. Describe the impact that behaviour had on you, the team or the work.
  3. Ask an open question to understand their view, such as what was going on for them.
  4. Make a clear request for what you would like to happen next time, or agree it together.
Tip: Keep the observation free of words like 'always' or 'never'; they invite argument rather than reflection.
