Tuckman's Stages of Group Development
Source: Bruce Tuckman (1965); fifth stage added with Mary Ann Jensen (1977)
Teams typically move through forming, storming, norming and performing, and adjourning when the work ends.
When to use it
Use it to recognise where a team is and adjust how you lead it.
How to apply it
- Forming: set clear goals, roles and ways of working.
- Storming: bring disagreements into the open and help resolve them.
- Norming: reinforce the agreed habits and step back from day-to-day direction.
- Performing: delegate, remove obstacles and focus on development.
- Adjourning: mark the ending and capture lessons learned.
Tip: Teams slip back to earlier stages when members or goals change, so expect to revisit them.
