Six Leadership Styles
Source: Daniel Goleman, 'Leadership That Gets Results', Harvard Business Review (2000)
Six styles: coercive, authoritative (visionary), affiliative, democratic, pacesetting and coaching. Effective leaders switch between them.
When to use it
Use it to widen your range and choose a style that suits the situation.
How to apply it
- Identify the one or two styles you rely on most.
- Use the visionary style when a team needs a clear new direction.
- Use the coaching style to develop people for the long term.
- Use affiliative or democratic styles to rebuild trust or gather input.
- Keep coercive and pacesetting styles for crises or short bursts.
Tip: Pacesetting feels productive to the leader but often wears teams down if used for long.
