Multipliers
Source: Liz Wiseman with Greg McKeown, Multipliers (2010)
Some leaders amplify the intelligence and capability of their people (Multipliers); others drain it (Diminishers), often without meaning to.
When to use it
Use it to check whether your leadership habits are expanding or shrinking your team's contribution.
How to apply it
- Notice where you jump in with answers or take over.
- Give people stretch challenges beyond their current role.
- Ask hard questions instead of providing the solution.
- Debate decisions openly before making the final call.
- Hand back ownership clearly and let people finish the work.
Tip: Well-meaning habits such as always having ideas or rescuing quickly can be among the most diminishing.
