Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA)
Source: Walter Shewhart; developed and popularised by W. Edwards Deming, who later preferred Plan-Do-Study-Act
An iterative improvement cycle: plan a change, try it, check the results against expectations, then act on what you learned.
When to use it
Use it when you are pursuing a goal through repeated small improvements rather than one big launch.
How to apply it
- Plan by defining the goal, the change you will try and the result you expect.
- Do by running the change on a small scale.
- Check by comparing actual results with the expected result.
- Act by adopting, adjusting or abandoning the change based on what you found.
- Start the next cycle with the updated plan.
Tip: Write down the expected result before you start, otherwise the Check stage has nothing to compare against.
