Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Modes
Source: Kenneth Thomas & Ralph Kilmann
Five ways of handling conflict, plotted on assertiveness and cooperativeness: competing, collaborating, compromising, avoiding and accommodating.
When to use it
Use it to choose a deliberate approach to a conflict instead of falling back on habit.
How to apply it
- Identify the mode you usually default to under pressure.
- Judge how important the issue is to you.
- Judge how important the relationship is to you.
- Pick the mode that fits: for example, collaborate when both matter and time allows.
- Afterwards, review whether the mode you chose worked.
Tip: No mode is always best; avoiding is sensible for trivial issues, competing for urgent safety decisions.
