Circle of Control
Source: Stephen R. Covey (The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People), as the Circle of Influence and Circle of Concern
Separate what concerns you into what you can control, what you can influence and what you cannot affect. Put your energy into the first two.
When to use it
Use it when you feel stressed by events or decisions outside your control.
How to apply it
- List everything currently worrying you.
- Sort each item into control, influence or no control.
- Choose one action for each item you control.
- Choose one way to exert influence on items you can influence.
- Consciously let go of items you cannot affect.
Tip: Revisit the list weekly, as items can move between circles.
