Pareto Principle (80/20 Rule)
Source: Vilfredo Pareto's observation on wealth distribution; generalised by Joseph Juran as the 'vital few and trivial many'
A small share of inputs often drives a large share of results. The 80/20 split is a rule of thumb, not a fixed ratio.
When to use it
Use it when you need to decide where to focus limited time or effort.
How to apply it
- List the activities, clients or tasks that take up your time.
- Estimate the results each one produces.
- Identify the few items generating most of the value.
- Increase time spent on those high-value items.
- Reduce, delegate or stop the low-value items where you can.
Tip: Use real data where possible; gut feel about what is valuable is often wrong.
