1-3-5 Rule
Source: Popularised by the careers site The Muse
Plan each day around one big task, three medium tasks and five small tasks. The fixed shape forces realistic choices about capacity.
When to use it
Use it when your daily to-do list is consistently longer than you can finish.
How to apply it
- Choose one big task that matters most today.
- Add three medium-sized tasks.
- Add five small tasks that can be done quickly.
- Leave everything else off today's list.
- Adjust the numbers if your days regularly contain more or less unplanned work.
Tip: If you have lots of meetings, leave some of the nine slots empty to reflect the time you actually have.
