Eisenhower Matrix
Source: Dwight D. Eisenhower; popularised by Stephen Covey (The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People)
A two-by-two grid that sorts tasks by urgency and importance. Each quadrant has a default action: do, schedule, delegate or drop.
When to use it
Use it when your list is long and everything feels equally pressing.
How to apply it
- List every task currently on your plate.
- Mark each task as urgent or not urgent, and important or not important.
- Do urgent and important tasks today.
- Book specific time for important but not urgent tasks.
- Delegate urgent tasks that are not important to you.
- Remove or park tasks that are neither urgent nor important.
Tip: Most people under-invest in the important but not urgent quadrant, so schedule it first.
