STAR
Source: No single confirmed originator; widely used in behavioural interviewing and competency-based assessment
A structure for telling a concise example story: Situation, Task, Action and Result.
When to use it
Use it in interviews, performance reviews and status updates when you need to evidence what you did.
How to apply it
- Set out the Situation briefly, with only the context needed.
- Describe the Task or challenge you were responsible for.
- Explain the Actions you personally took, using 'I' rather than 'we'.
- State the Result, quantified where possible, and what you learned.
Tip: Most people spend too long on the Situation; keep the bulk of the story on Action and Result.
