BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front)
Source: No single originator; a long-standing convention in US military writing
A writing rule that puts the conclusion, request or decision in the first line, followed by only the background needed.
When to use it
Use it for emails and messages to busy people who may read only the first few lines.
How to apply it
- Decide the single thing you need the reader to know or do.
- Write that as the first sentence, including any deadline.
- Add only the essential background beneath it.
- Cut anything the reader does not need to act.
- Put the key point in the subject line where relevant.
Tip: BLUF can read as abrupt, so add a brief courtesy line if the relationship needs it.
