RAPID Decision Roles
Source: Bain & Company; described by Paul Rogers and Marcia Blenko in Harvard Business Review (2006)
A tool that clarifies decision roles: who Recommends, who must Agree, who Performs, who gives Input and who Decides.
When to use it
Use it when important decisions are stuck, revisited or contested between stakeholders.
How to apply it
- Identify the specific decision that needs to be made.
- Name the single person who Decides.
- Name who Recommends, who gives Input and who must Agree.
- Name who will Perform the decision once made.
- Share the roles with everyone involved before the decision process begins.
Tip: Keep the Agree role small; each person with a veto adds delay.
