Source: Adapted from Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, On Death and Dying (her original stages described grief, not organisational change)
A widely used adaptation showing that people often move through reactions such as shock, denial, frustration, testing and acceptance during major change. Performance and morale typically dip before recovering.
When to use it
Use it to make sense of your reactions to a restructure, redundancy or unwanted role change.
How to apply it
Name the change and note the date it was announced.
Identify which reaction best describes how you feel now.
Accept that the dip is normal and avoid major decisions at the lowest point if you can.
Talk to someone you trust about the reaction you are in.
Set one small, practical goal that moves you towards testing the new situation.
Tip: People do not move through the stages in a neat order; expect to revisit earlier ones.
