When to use it

Use it when a decision, job offer or source of frustration feels out of line with what matters to you.

How to apply it
  1. Write or print a list of 30–80 values, one per card, such as security, autonomy, recognition and family.
  2. Sort every card into three piles: very important, important and not important.
  3. Narrow the very important pile down to your top five.
  4. For each of the five, write one sentence on how your current work honours or conflicts with it.
  5. Choose one change that would bring your work closer to your top value.
Tip: Sort quickly; the values you hesitate over are often ones you think you should hold rather than ones you do.
