Flow
Source: Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience)
Flow is a state of deep absorption in an activity. It is more likely when goals are clear, feedback is immediate and challenge is matched to skill.
When to use it
Use it when designing work sessions where you want full engagement.
How to apply it
- Set a clear goal for the session.
- Choose a task that stretches your skills slightly without overwhelming you.
- Arrange a way to see your progress as you go.
- Remove interruptions for the length of the session.
- Raise the challenge if you feel bored, or lower it if you feel anxious.
Tip: Flow cannot be forced; aim to create the conditions and let it follow.
