A guideline suggesting that most development comes from on-the-job experience, a smaller share from relationships with others, and the least from formal training. The ratios are a rule of thumb from research with executives, not a precise formula.
When to use it
Use it when planning a development goal so you do not rely on courses alone.
How to apply it
Choose one skill you want to develop this quarter.
Find a stretch task or project at work that requires that skill.
Identify a colleague or mentor who can give feedback while you do it.
Add one short course, book or resource to fill knowledge gaps.
Review progress with your manager after six to eight weeks.
Tip: Treat the numbers as a balance check, not a target to measure exactly.
