Career Capital
Source: Cal Newport, So Good They Can't Ignore You (2012)
Build rare and valuable skills first, then trade them for the control and meaning you want, rather than starting from a fixed passion.
When to use it
Use it when you are unsure of your passion or want more autonomy in your work.
How to apply it
- Identify which skills are rare and valuable in your field.
- Choose one to develop deliberately.
- Practise it with focused, demanding effort and seek feedback.
- Track evidence that others value it, such as requests or pay.
- Use that capital to negotiate more autonomy or better projects.
Tip: Ask for autonomy only when you have the capital to back it up; asking too early rarely works.
